Drawing and Painting Weaving Stitchery
Art History  Ceramics and Sculpture Cultures

The arts play a vital role in the overall development of every child.  Through the visual arts, students here at Riverside Elementary are given, the opportunity to express themselves through a variety of media, including drawing and painting, weaving, stitchery, cceramics and sculpture, in addition to the study of art history.  The visual arts program at Riverside is discipline based and includes lessons from four content areas, for grades K-5.

Artistic Perception - Students learn skills to make them more aware and sensitive to the natural and human - made environments around them.

Art Production - Students are given opportunities to create their own expressive works of art by learning techniques and using a variety materials.  The goal is for children to develop manipulative skills and understand properties in order to express individual ideas, thoughts and feeling, as well as learn safety procedures and appropriate work habits.

Art History - By studying the world's cultures through the visual arts, students gain insight to the past as well as the present.  They learn that art is a part of every culture including their own and that it changes over time and serves as a visual record of the history of our world.

Art Criticism - By talking about works of art, including their own, students learn to make aesthetic judgments and recognize the value of the art works of others, not only the great masters, but of their fellow classmates too.
