Committee Recommendations:
Elementary Early Release Proposal
At
last night’s Board of Education Meeting, Superintendent Price, reported to the Board the timeline for
studying the recommendations for the elementary early release proposal
presented to the Board at the November 9, 2004 Board of Education Meeting. At the November meeting, the recommendations
considered the restructuring of the elementary school day to provide for an
early release day one day a week. No
action has been made by the Board other than to acknowledge the Committee’s
efforts and have the Committee continue to study with input from the school
councils.
The
Strategic Planning Committee timeline for presenting the proposal to school
councils began in December and will go through to the end of January. (See
Table A.) Each school council has been
asked to meet and bring any concerns or issues back to the strategic planning
committee to summarize for a report to the Board of Education in February
before seeking input from parent groups and the general public. “While we recognize the research that
identifies the importance for teachers to have time to plan and analyze student
assessments, great diligence must be given to understanding and resolving all
parent concerns across our county before considering such a major change for
our students,“ said Tommy Price,
Superintendent of Schools.

The Strategic Planning Committee has compiled a
list of internet sites to help provide information on the research of teacher
collaboration and other school systems using an early release alternative
school day for teacher staff development.
