Ms. Shaun Owen of Greenbrier Middle earned the title of
Columbia County Teacher of the Year. Now
she has been selected as one of the ten semi-finalists and is one step closer
to being named
The selection process begins at the local level with 133 applicants recognized as his or her system’s Teacher of the Year. “It is no surprise to me that Ms. Owen is one of the semi-finalists. She is filled with excitement, enthusiasm, and a passion for teaching. Not only does she challenge and motivate her students for greater academic success but she also volunteers at a halfway home for troubled teenage girls and is an excellent role model. This is a great accomplishment not only for Shaun, but also for Greenbrier Middle and Columbia County, “said Tommy Price, Superintendent of Schools.
The entries were evaluated by an expert panel of business leaders and
educators, including former Teachers of the Year and Milken
Family Foundation Educators. Applicants explained their vision for education in
To be considered as a candidate for Georgia Teacher of the Year, teachers had to meet the following criteria:
· Teach students in
kindergarten through grade 12, including special education, physical education,
art, music, and media specialists;
· Display exceptional
dedication, knowledge, and skills;
· Plan to continue in
active teaching status;
· Inspire students of
all backgrounds and abilities to learn;
· Have the respect and
admiration of students, parents, and colleagues;
· Play an active and
useful role in the community as well as in the school; and
· Possess the poise
and energy to withstand a taxing schedule.
In the coming weeks, a panel of judges will make site visits to each of the
finalist's schools to observe them in their classrooms and conduct interviews.
