Columbia County Teacher of the Year Named State Semi-Finalist

Ms. Shaun Owen of Greenbrier Middle earned the title of Columbia County Teacher of the Year.  Now she has been selected as one of the ten semi-finalists and is one step closer to being named Georgia’s Teacher of the Year.

The selection process begins at the local level with 133 applicants recognized as his or her system’s Teacher of the Year.  “It is no surprise to me that Ms. Owen is one of the semi-finalists.  She is filled with excitement, enthusiasm, and a passion for teaching. Not only does she challenge and motivate her students for greater academic success but she also volunteers at a halfway home for troubled teenage girls and is an excellent role model.  This is a great accomplishment not only for Shaun, but also for Greenbrier Middle and Columbia County, “said Tommy Price, Superintendent of Schools.

The entries were evaluated by an expert panel of business leaders and educators, including former Teachers of the Year and Milken Family Foundation Educators. Applicants explained their vision for education in Georgia, views on important issues and trends, and the value of using data to drive classroom instruction.

To be considered as a candidate for Georgia Teacher of the Year, teachers had to meet the following criteria:

· Teach students in kindergarten through grade 12, including special education, physical education, art, music, and media specialists;
· Display exceptional dedication, knowledge, and skills;
· Plan to continue in active teaching status;
· Inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn;
· Have the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues;
· Play an active and useful role in the community as well as in the school; and
· Possess the poise and energy to withstand a taxing schedule.

In the coming weeks, a panel of judges will make site visits to each of the finalist's schools to observe them in their classrooms and conduct interviews. The 2006 Georgia Teacher of the Year will be announced at an awards celebration on March 18, 2005.
