An unofficial summary of discussions, presentations, and
actions fo the Columbia County Board of Education.

Present were Superintendent Thomas A. Price, Chairman
Regina Buccafusco, Vice-Chair Mildred Blackburn, Wayne
Bridges, Mike Sleeper, and Roxanne Whitaker. Dr. Cynthia
Taylor of Church of the Holy Comforter conducted the
invocation. |

BOARD COMMENTS |
|
Congratulations went out to the Greenbrier High baseball team
for their recent state championship and to the staff for Mr.
Price's retirement reception. |

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION |
|
Michel Young, from the Columbia County Foundation for
Children, gave a brief background on the organization and
informed the Board that they awarded need-based scholarships
to 22 Columbia County students to attend summer school for a
total of $3190. She expressed appreciation to the school
social workers, school counselors, and Mr. Greg Bunn, summer
school principal, for their assistance in awarding the
scholarships. |

BOARD ITEMS |
|
Mr. Bridges asked that the Board discuss Pre-k at the next BOE
meeting. |

|
BOARD APPROVALS |
|
Consent Items. The Board gave final approval
of items: minutes of 4/13/07, 4/24/07, 5/1/07, and 5/8/07,
April financials, employee travel, fundraisers, approval of
KHE, school partnerships, camps, EHS request for loan from BOE
for improvements, and requests to state for variances of the
Georgia High School Graduation requirement. Budget
Amendments. The Board gave final approval to the
following General Fund or Special Revenue Amendments: Budget
Amendment No. 55 - To budget funds for the Georgia Virtual
School program ($8,600 ); Budget Amendment No. 56 - To budget
the difference in the actual state midterm adjustment and the
estimated amount budgeted ($1,564,023); Budget Amendment No.
57 - To budget the difference in Lottery Pre-K actually
received and the amount used in budgeting ($ -60,476).
Budget Transfers. The Board gave final
approval to the following General Fund or Special Revenue
Transfers: Budget Transfer No. 10 - Transfer funds for
Brookwood Elementary in the K-8 Reading and Math Grant to pay
for teachers to attend math workshop; Budget Transfer No. 11
- Transfer funds in the Title 6B grant to cover cost of
salaries and benefits by function; Budget Transfer No. 12 -
Transfer funds in the
Harlem Middle Title I School Improvement Grant to cover cost
of summer teacher workshops; Budget Transfer No. 13 - To
transfer funds to reimburse Evans High for cost of charter
buses for athletic events.
BOE Policies. The Board gave final approval to
Policy JBD - Absences and Excuses. All BOE policies can be

FY2008 Budget. The Board gave final
approval of the
FY2008 Budget, which included the following
improvements: planning period added and supplement continued
for high school department chairs; 1/2 time assistant
principals added at GHS and EHS; improvements added for
athletic supplements (includes lacrosse); salaries for the
four teachers for the elementary foreign language program at
Stevens Creek Elementary funded 100% with local funds for
2007-2008. Mr. Price expressed to the Board that they are
not in any position to fund foreign language expansion to
all elementary schools.

BUILDING PROGRAM |
|
Project Update. Mr. Price updated the Board on the
various building projects going within the county: painting at
GMS & GHS; Twelve classroom additions at Lewiston and River
Ridge(view
progress); Cedar Ridge Elementary in Grovetown (view
progress); the New middle School #3 on Blackstone Camp
Road (view
progress); New High School #1 on Chamblin Road to be
completed July 2010; and the Underground Storage Tank (UTS)
removal at the Alternative School.
Bid Results. The Board gave final approval of bid
results and awarded contract for site improvements for the
new high school to the lowest bidder - Mabus Brothers
Construction for a price of $9,829,333 plus the addition of
8" sewer line. The additional cost to upgrade to a 12"
sewer line would have to be reimbursed by the owner of the
property prior to installation by Mabus Brothers.
Easement Requests. The Board gave approval for
easements to Georgia Power at the new high school site and
to Columbia County Water Utility at Greenbrier High.
Land Acquisition Request. Bradley Schools is
interested in acquiring a
one acre parcel between their property and Stevens Creek
Elementary. The parcel is undeveloped and the Board has no
plans to develop in the future. The Board authorized Mr.
Price to proceed with establishing a fair market price.

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT/ANNOUNCEMENTS |
|
Summer School Enrollment. Mr. Price reported to the
Board the summer school enrollment. Over 500 students are
enrolled in CRCT grades 3, 5, & 8 summer school.
Approximately, 178 middle school students and 520 high school
students are enrolled in summer school with a total of 1072
segments or classes. Special Event Dates:
- Summer School Graduation - Greenbrier High, July 13 at
3:30pm
- New Teacher Orientation Luncheon - Savannah Rapids, July
17 at 11:30
- Tax Digest Hearing Dates:
July 10 at 7:30am - CCBOE

PERSONNEL
RECOMMENDATIONS |
|
On the recommendations
of Superintendent Price, the personnel recommendations were
approved as presented.
New Assistant
Principals Named for 2007-2008. The Board approved the
following new assistant principals for 2007-2008 School
Year: Angie McQuaig, a teacher at River Ridge
Elementary was named assistant principal (1/2 time) at
Greenbrier Middle and will replace Peggy Stoming; Kay
Patton, a teacher at North Harlem Elementary was named
assistant principal at Greenbrier Elementary and will
replace Judy Bonadio; Kim Romero, a teacher at Greenbrier
Middle was named assistant principal at Westmont Elementary
and will replace Revelle Cox. Alice Pretlow returns to
Columbia County and will fill the newly created position of
SST Assessment Coordinator in Special Services. Previously,
she was employed with Warren County.

NEXT MEETING: The next scheduled Board meeting will be
a Study Session on June 26 at the Board of Education Office in
Evans at 5:30pm. |
