Present were Superintendent Charles R. Nagle, Chairman Regina Buccafusco,  Mildred Blackburn, Wayne Bridges, and Roxanne Whitaker.  Dr. Roger Murchison from First Baptist Church of Augusta conducted the invocation.

BOARD COMMENTS
Board members congratulated students and teachers that were recognized under special recognitions. Congratulations were also given to the retirees honored at the Annual Retirement Reception and to the students at Brookwood Elementary and Harlem High for their drama productions/performances held this past week.
PUBLIC PARTICIPATION
Taylor Brooks, a senior at Evans High School, encouraged the Board to keep the Career Center Specialist position at the high schools. Taylor also suggested ways to utilize the culinary arts students for special school events and the automotive students for providing automotive work for employees.

There were no BOARD ITEMS at this meeting.
BUDGET STUDY SESSION - 4:00 p.m.

Budget Study Session.  Mr. Nagle reviewed the 2009-2010 Budget (view proposed budget).  As part of a state grant, the Board aproved a new position for a Youth Apprenticeship Coordinator to work with all five high schools.  Also, the Board approved a revised work schedule for technology support specialists (TSS) and custodians to maximize work efficiency during the summer. The Board is expected to give tentative approval for the 2009-2010 budget at the May 28 meeting.

BOARD APPROVALS

Consent Items.  The Board gave final approval of the following consent items: minutes of 04/28/09 and 05/05/09, employee travel, fundraisers, partnerships, and program/camp employee requests.  The Board gave final approval of request to the State Board of Education for a variance of the Georgia high school graduation requirements.

Budget Amendments/Transfers.  The Board gave final approval to the following Budget Amendments and/or Transfers: General Fund Budget Transfer No. 8 - To transfer funds to the Greenbrier High School Special Board Grant from improvement of instruction to instruction; General Fund Budget Amendment No. 37 - To budget a reduction in state revenues due to increased austerity and a decrease in health insurance reimbursement rates ($-4,669,000); General Fund Budget Amendment No. 38 - To budget matching competitive grant funds for Cedar Ridge Elementary for SRNS-Step Up to the Challenge: Building Muscle in Math ($500); and General Fund Budget Amendment No. 39 - To budget matching competitive grant funds for River Ridge Elementary for Georgia Learn & Serve Grant: River Ridge is Going Green ($500).

Board Policies.  The Board gave final approval to the following policies: Policy IHE - Promotion, Placement, and Retention; and Policy JCDAD/EDCB - Bus Conduct.  All BOE policies can be viewed by going to: http://www.ccboe.net/boe/policies/home.html.

BUILDING PROGRAM

Project Update.  Mr. Nagle updated the Board on the various building projects going on within the county: re-roofing projects at HMS and LHS (view progress); and Grovetown High School on Chamblin Road (view progress). The Board approved Change Order No. 1 for Martinez Elementary re-roofing project ($53,529).

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT/ANNOUNCEMENTS

Code of Conduct.  Mr. Nagle presented an update to the middle/high school code of conduct for the 2009-2010 school year (view approved changes to the code of conduct).

Open House Schedule. Mr. Nagle notified the Board of Open House dates on August 4 & 6:

  • High School - August 4, 6:00- 8:00 p.m.
  • Elementary School - August 6, 5:00- 7:00 p.m. 
  • Middle School - August 6, 6:00- 8:00 p.m.

Important Dates. Mr. Nagle reminded the Board of a few dates:

  • Evans High School Career, Technical and Agricultural Education Advisory Board Scholarship Presentation and Reception, May 13, 3:00 p.m., Evans High School, Room 182
  • Nurses Appreciation Breakfast, May 14, 7:45 a.m., Brandon Wilde Clubhouse
  • Baccalaureate Harlem High, May 14, 6:00 p.m., Harlem High School
  • High School Graduation, May 23, James Brown Arena: Harlem High School at 9:00 a.m., Greenbrier High School at 11:30 a.m., Lakeside High School at 2:00 p.m., and Evans High School at 4:30 p.m.
PERSONNEL RECOMMENDATIONS
On the recommendations of Superintendent Nagle, the personnel recommendations were approved as presented.

NEXT MEETING: The next scheduled Board meeting will be a Study Session on May 28 at the Board of Education Office in Evans at 5:30pm.
