Present were Superintendent Charles R. Nagle, Chairman Regina Buccafusco, Vice-Chair Roxanne Whitaker, Mildred Blackburn, Wayne Bridges, and Mike Sleeper.  Pastor Bill Hilley from Grace Baptist Church conducted the invocation.

 

SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS 

There were no special recognitions.

 

BOARD COMMENTS

Board members expressed congratulations to each other for the July primary and will look forward to working together for another term.  Mr. Sleeper apologized to Board members and staff for not attending tax hearing and causing an additional Board meeting.

 

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION

Julie Miller of Family Connections, along with Ryan Clark's mother, presented information about the Ryan Clark Scholarship and Community Service Award to be awarded to any Columbia or Richmond County high school student at an award ceremony in May.  Information will be shared with school guidance counselors in August. A fund has been established at Security Federal Bank in Evans (706-650-6788) to accept donations toward this award in honor of Lakeside graduate, Ryan Clark.

 

BOARD ITEMS

There were no BOARD ITEMS at this meeting.

 

BOARD APPROVALS

Consent Items.  The Board gave final approval of consent items: minutes of 6/10/08 (called meeting and regular session), 6/24/08-study session, 6/30/08-tax digest hearing, May financials, employee travel, fundraisers, and partnerships.  The Board gave final approvals for:  request for loan from Board for athletic uniforms and equipment for Stallings Island Middle, contract extension with Community Service Board of East Central Georgia, Memorandum of Understanding with Family Connections for 21st Century Grant, and Memorandum of Understanding with Family Connections for CSRA Foundation Grant.

Board Policies.  The Board gave final approval to the following policies: Policy CGPH-Vacations-Twelve Month District and Support Personnel; Policy GBRIG-Vacations-Twelve Month District and Support Personnel; and Policy JBC (2) - Acceptance of Transfer Credit and/or Grades, Assignment to Classes. Bid Results. The Board approved the bid results and contract awards for School Nutrition Program (SNP) for the following : SNP food products were awarded to US Food Service ($2,045,871); SNP produce was awarded to Leo's Produce ($10,272); SNP paper products were awarded to Southeastern Paper Group ($268,071); SNP bread was awarded to Derst Baking Company ($178,890); and SNP Beverages were awarded to Coca-Cola ($220,100). 

 

 

BUILDING PROGRAM

Project Update.  Mr. Nagle updated the Board on the one building project going on within the county:  Grovetown High School on Chamblin Road (view progress).  The Board gave final approval for Change Order No. 6 and 7 - Grovetown High School.

 

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT/ANNOUNCEMENTS

Important Dates. Mr. Nagle reminded the Board of a few dates:

  • Summer School Graduation: July 14, 5:00pm at Evans High School
  • Tax Digest Hearing: July 22, 5:00pm at CCBOE
  • Set Millage Rate: July 22, 5:30pm at CCBOE
  • New Teacher Induction - July 22-24 - Savannah Rapids, Luncheon on July 22, 11:30am at Savannah Rapids
  • System-wide Business Partner Breakfast: July 29, 7:30am at CCBOE
  • Back to School Festival: August 2, 10:00am-2:00pm at CCBOE
  • Stallings Island Dedication: August 5 at 4:00pm
  • Open House Schedule - High School: August 5, 6:00-8:00pm, Middle School: August 7, 4:30-8:30pm, and Elementary School: August 7, 5:00-7:00pm

 

 

PERSONNEL RECOMMENDATIONS

On the recommendations of Superintendent Nagle, the personnel recommendations were approved as presented.

 

 

 

MILLAGE RATE ROLLBACK HEARING

Mr. Nagle summarized to the Board the 2008-2009 Budget and the expected shortfall if there was to be a millage rate rollback.  Mr. Nagle recommended to the Board to maintain the millage rate at 17.09.  The final meeting to set the millage rate will be on July 22 at 5:30pm.

 

NEXT MEETING: The next scheduled Board meeting will be a Study Session on July 22 at the Board of Education Office in Evans at 5:30pm.
