Present were Superintendent Charles R. Nagle, Chairman Regina Buccafusco, Wayne Bridges, and Mike Sleeper.  Pastor Roger Vest of Harlem United Methodist Church conducted the invocation.

 

BOARD COMMENTS

Board members commented how fast the year has gone and congratulated students and teachers that were recognized under special recognitions. Congratulations were also given to retirees and to the baseball teams of Greenbrier High and Harlem High for making state playoffs.

 

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION

There was no public participation at this BOE meeting.

 

BOARD ITEMS

The Board voted to uphold the Disciplinary Hearing Appeal Case 07-08-402.  Mr. Bridges considered whether the schools are putting the right people in place as Athletic Directors.  Mr. Nagle reminded the Board that we have high expectations for each sport coach and also provide a planning period and coaching supplement to each sport coach.  Mr. Sleeper asked for a copy of the technology audit report.

 

PERSONNEL RECOMMENDATIONS

On the recommendations of Superintendent Nagle, the personnel recommendations were approved as presented. Dr. Judy Holtan was named principal of Greenbrier Elementary, replacing Michelle Sherman who was promoted last month to director of student learning (K-5).  Dr. Hogan brings over 22 years experience in  leadership from Jenkins County.

BOARD APPROVALS

Consent Items.  The Board gave final approval of consent items: minutes of 4/16/08, 4/22/08, and 5/6/08;  employee travel, fundraisers, Camps, and Policy KHE-gifts..  The Board gave final approval for request of waiver to Policy IED (2) and request to state Board of Education for variance of the Georgia High School graduation requirements.

Budget Amendments/Transfers.  The Board gave final approval to the following Budget Amendments and/or Transfers: General Fund Budget Transfer No. 13 - To transfer funds to reimburse Lakeside High School for cost of charter buses for athletic events; General Fund Budget Transfer No. 14 - To transfer funds for Harlem High School for staff development activities; General Fund Budget Amendment No. 41 -To budget the difference in the actual state midterm adjustment and the estimated amount ($44,680); and General Fund Budget Amendment No. 42 - To budget the difference in the Lottery Pre-K funds actual state midterm adjustment and the estimated amount (-$49,653).

BOE Policies.  The Board gave final approval to Policy CC - Organization Chart and Policy JBCA - School Admission of Homeless Students.  All BOE policies can be viewed by going to:

BUILDING PROGRAM

Project Update.  Mr. Nagle updated the Board on the various building projects going on within the county:  Grovetown High School on Chamblin Road (view progress)

 

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT/ANNOUNCEMENTS

Athletic Ticket Prices.  Mr. Nagle presented the athletic ticket prices for 2008-2009. The recommended increase was at the request of all four high schools to help offset the cost for uniforms and officials.  Board Member Ms. Whitaker had some questions that will be tabled until the next meeting (view ticket prices).

Summer School Schedule.  Mr. Nagle reminded the Board of the summer school schedule, which begins June 2 with CRCT at Lewiston and Cedar Ridge Elementary and middle school/high school at Evans High (view schedule)

Open House Schedule.  Mr. Nagle reviewed with the Board the schedule for Open House (view schedule)

Important Dates. Mr. Nagle reminded the Board of a few dates:

  • Baccalaureate (Harlem High) - May 18, 6:00pm - Harlem High
  • High School Graduation - May 24 - James Brown Arena: 9:00am - GHS, 11:30am - LHS, 2:00pm - EHS, 4:30pm - HHS
  • New Teacher Induction - July 22-24 - Savannah Rapids
  • Proposed Dates for Tax Digest Hearings: June 24, 7:30am at CCBOE, June 24, 6:00pm at CCBOE
  • Hearings and Set Mill Rate: July 8, 5:30pm at CCBOE

 

 

 

NEXT MEETING: The next scheduled Board meeting will be a Study Session on May 27 at the Board of Education Office in Evans at 5:30pm.
