Swearing-in of New Board Members

Judge Hardaway issues the oath of office to Columbia County Board of Education members Mike Sleeper, Roxanne Whitaker, and Wayne Bridges.

Columbia County Board of Education members Mike Sleeper (District 5), Roxanne Whitaker (District 4), and Wayne Bridges (District 2) were sworn in at a ceremony January 3 at the Board of Education office in Appling. Columbia County Probate Judge Hardaway issued the oath of office.

 

Beginning his first term as a Board member, Mike Sleeper brings to the position a background of computer science and technology. A graduate of Evans High School, and University of Georgia, he is employed as a computer security engineer.

 

Board members Roxanne Whitaker and Wayne Bridges were re-elected to four-year terms beginning January 1.

 

 


 

BOARD APPROVALS/Discussions
Zoning Options for New Elementary.  The Board gave tentative approval for Zoning Option 2 with waivers available for students in the Greenbrier and Stevens Creek zones.  A waiver may be requested for Greenbrier Elementary students in 5th grade for next school year for  transitioning to the middle school feeder zone.  A waiver may be requested for Stevens Creek Elementary students to continue foreign language instruction.  Parents requesting a waiver are responsible for providing student transportation to and from school. Information about the zoning options can be found at www.ccboe.net.

PERSONNEL RECOMMENDATIONS
On the recommendation of Superintendent Price, the personnel recommendations were approved as presented. 

Congratulations to Dr. Sandy Black for being approved by the Board as the principal for the new elementary school on Mullikin Road.

BOARD ITEMS
Board members elected Regina Buccafusco as Board Chairman, and Wayne Bridges as Vice-Chairman for 2005.  Also approved was the appointment of Board Attorney, Bill Fleming and the continuation of times and locations for BOE meetings.  Meetings will begin at 6:00pm and held on the 2nd Tuesday at Evans Government  Complex and the 4th Tuesday at the Board of Education office in Appling.
