State Recognizes 11 Columbia County Schools

for High Academic Performance

Second highest among comparable Systems in the state for % of schools recognized

Forty percent of Columbia County Schools received award designations of platinum, gold, silver, or bronze based on the number of years the school made AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress), the greatest gain in percentage of students meeting and exceeding standards, and the highest percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards.  This places Columbia County second behind Fayette County for the highest percentage of schools recognized in systems with 20 or more schools.

“Our teachers, administrative and support staff are to be commended for this outstanding accomplishment, as well as our students for their hard work and commitment. I am encouraged by the results that indicate we have built good, solid foundations in our schools. Even though our middle schools have yet to reach the award levels, our data shows they are making gains and moving in a positive direction,” said Tommy Price, Superintendent of Schools. All 27 schools met or exceeded the 80% for Performance Highlights as indicated in the State’s Accountability Profile.   Awards received by Columbia County Schools make up 5 percent of the 286 awards given out across the 180 school systems in Georgia.

Ten elementary schools and one high school received awards in the highest percentage category.  Belair and Riverside Elementary both received gold.  They made AYP for two consecutive years, had 30 percent exceeding standards and at least 97 percent of students meeting and exceeding standards.

Blue Ridge, Greenbrier, Martinez, North Columbia, and Stevens Creek Elementary received silver. They made AYP for two consecutive years, had 25 percent exceeding standards, and at least 96 percent of students meeting and exceeding standards.

Evans, River Ridge, and Westmont Elementary earned bronze. They are not in needs improvement status and had 20% exceeding standards, and at least 95% of students exceeding or meeting standards.  Additionally, Evans High was the only high school to receive an award (bronze)

Only fifteen schools in the state received awards for both greatest gain and highest percentage.  Columbia County has three of the ten schools: Belair Elementary; Greenbrier Elementary; and North Columbia Elementary.
