Employment
Professional employment in the Columbia County School System is based on the principal’s recommendation and approval by the Superintendent and the Columbia County Board of Education. Continued employment is based on satisfactory job performance.
Classroom observations of teaching performance will be conducted on a regular basis by the principal and/or designated professional. Evaluation, whether formal or informal, is intended to serve as a vehicle for self improvement. Cooperative planning to determine steps toward job performance improvement is the objective. The administrator may recommend that a person participate in staff development or work with a colleague or consultant. It is the teacher’s responsibility to pursue appropriate activities as suggested for remediation or enrichment. The annual evaluation process will be conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Georgia model evaluation programs. Based on the results of the formal classroom observation, the principal will recommend either (1) continued employment or (2 ) that the contract not be renewed. Persons who are recommended for re-contract and approved by the Columbia County Board of Education are issued a contract which must be signed and returned to the school principal no later than the established deadline each year. Teachers who are not recommended for continued employment by the principal will be notified in writing not later than April 15. A tenured teacher has 14 days after receipt of the letter to notify the superintendent of the desire for a hearing.
Professional recommendations for employment will be presented for Board of Education approval during the March board meeting.
