The Parent’s Role in the High School Setting
  • Presented by:
  • Dr. Sheree Gates
3
Supervision of Homework
  • Despite his or her physical size, your child still needs your supervision of the homework process.  The degree to which the student is independent and reliable will dictate the degree to which the child’s homework completion needs to be supervised.  Most seniors still need some supervision.
  • Students should continue to use their agendas every day for every subject.  If there is no homework in a given subject, it should read, “NH” (No Homework).

i-Parent:

  • This software is a valuable tool in the Parent-School Communication process.  i-Parent is accessible from the internet and informs the parents of the student’s schedule, grades and assignments.  Parents will need a username and password for their account.  Angie Deming is the point of contact for any problems with this software: ademing@ccboe.net.   It is recommended that parents periodically check i-Parent to stay informed.

Parent Communication
  • Setting up Conferences:
  • 1.  If it is a conference with one or two individual teachers, a parent should communicate directly with the teacher in setting up a mutually convenient time for a conference (See “Academics” link under school web site to email teachers.) http://www1.ccboe.net/gbh/academics/index.htm ;
  • If a conference is needed with three or more teachers, call your child’s Guidance Counselor, 706-650-6040.  He or she will set up the conference and notify you of the date, place and time of the conference (almost always 7:00 a.m. when teachers are usually available);

The HOPE Scholarship Program
  • Presented by:
  • Mr. Steve Metcalf
21
HOPE — Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally
  • This is Georgia's unique scholarship program that rewards students with financial assistance in degree, diploma, and certificate programs at eligible Georgia public and private colleges and universities, and public technical colleges. HOPE is funded entirely by The Georgia Lottery for Education.
22
Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program Overview
  • Georgia's HOPE Scholarship is available to Georgia residents who have demonstrated academic achievement throughout high school and maintain that achievement while in college. The scholarship provides funds to address many of the costs associated with tuition, fees and books for students who are pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree in Georgia's colleges and universities.  Specifically in Georgia’s public colleges, universities or technical colleges, funds cover most if not all the tuition and a book allowance.  If you wish to enroll in a Georgia private college, you may be eligible for a $3000  per academic year scholarship for full time study.
23
Eligibility
  • To receive HOPE Scholarship funding, students must:

  • Have graduated from an eligible high school with a 3.0 GPA on a true 4.0 scale.  (College Prep Students)
  • Have graduated from an eligible high school with a 3.2 GPA on a true 4.0 scale. (Technology/Career Prep Students)
  • Be a legal resident of Georgia.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or national of the U.S. or have evidence from Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) of eligible permanent resident alien status.
  • Be in compliance with Selective Service registration requirements.
  • Be in compliance with the Georgia Drug-Free Postsecondary Education Act of 1990. A student is ineligible if he or she has been convicted for committing certain felony offenses involving marijuana, controlled substances, or dangerous drugs.
  • Not be in default or owe a refund on a student financial aid program.
24
HOPE Grading Scale
  • The following scale will be used to convert numerical grades to a TRUE 4.0 scale:

  • A  =  4.0  (Grades from 90-100)
  • B  =  3.0   (Grades from 80-89)
  • C  =  2.0   (Grades from 73-79)
  • D  =  1.0  (Grades from 70-72)
  • F  =  0      (Grades of 69 or below)
25
HOPE Grades
  • The grades for ALL attempted (passed as well as failed) academic courses will be converted to a TRUE 4.0 scale for calculation of the HOPE GPA.  The following academic courses will be counted in the HOPE GPA calculation:

  • English (Language Arts)
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Foreign Language

  • *  Algebra 1 and other 8th grade courses that students received high school credit for in Middle School will NOT be used to calculate the HOPE GPA.
