It's been awhile since Evans fans
saw the offensive production dished out by the Knights on
Friday. The 37-10 win over visiting Lakeside was Evans' highest
point total in one game since 2001.
"Those 37 unanswered points
- that was good to see," Evans coach Marty Jackson said.
"We've got some good players, and we're playing together
well. What I love about this team right now is they expect to
win. The leadership has been good and it shows."
The leaders were the ones making
the big plays in the big rivalry matchup. Senior Tim Tillman
recovered a fumble, Mykel Green picked up a sack off the
defensive line and Michael Werrick blocked a punt. Defensive
backs Brandon McCladdie and Clayton Thomas grabbed
interceptions.
Then there was the offense.
Senior quarterback Kevin Millward completed five of 12 passes
for 182 yards and three touchdowns to three receivers. McCladdie,
Jonathan Nicely and Trey Henderson were on the receiving end of
those scoring strikes. Henderson and Taylor Hooven scored on the
ground, and Matt Dickerson connected on a 30-yard field goal.
It all combined to improve Evans
to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in region play, with bigger games coming
soon.
Up next
Even though the game against
Lakeside was a region rivalry, the win was out of the Knights'
minds soon after the final seconds ticked off the game clock.
"We needed to get this one
out of the way and get ready to play against the best football
team we'll see so far," Jackson said.
He was referring to Greenbrier.
The Knights, who lost a heartbreaker in the final seconds of the
game last year to the Wolfpack, will play host to Greenbrier on
Friday.
Along with the win against
Lakeside, Evans took care of Harlem 21-7 in the season opener.
That leaves only Greenbrier in the way of Evans' first Columbia
County sweep since 2004.
