A wrestling program, particularly a high school wrestling program, should focus on developing the desire and the skills required to achieve excellence. While it is relatively easy to concentrate exclusively on the development of athletic skills, the program should strive to achieve athletic success through the establishment of the attributes of the desire for excellence in all aspects of life:

  • The ability to focus on the task at hand
  • Prioritization and organization of the tasks needed to achieve excellence
  • Understanding the need for, and the rewards of, teamwork

Once these attributes become an integral part of the program, success will naturally follow.

A wrestling program is a collection of people. The team is made up of individuals; each with his or her own personal goals, strengths and weaknesses.

We as coaches must recognize and accept the traits of each competitor and find a way to integrate them into the team. To be successful, a program must not only consider the wrestlers. While a team is made up of competitors, a program is composed of much more. A program is a community made up of the competitors, ex-competitors, coaches, fans, support staff and, most importantly, the families of the competitors. Involving the parents and siblings of the wrestlers as a part of the community can be an effective means of establishing a sense of team unity. The fans, support staff, and families should always be included in the program's quest for excellence.
